Custom Robo Review

Lately there have been a lot of Robot themed games, and they range from either really good to very poor in quality. Nintendo has released their own robot themed game entitled Custom Robo: Battle Revolution. Does this game have what it takes to compete with some of the great Robot fighting games, or does it come up short? Read on to find out!

This game has some very strange ideas, and this will become apparent in the first fifteen minutes. The first thing that you have to know about this game is that all the robots are small, very small. They reside inside a small cube, until you call on them to do battle in the Holosseum. So if any of you were drooling about having huge robot battles, you can forget about it.

If burglary is happening, and you see two people, a cop and the robber, and in-between them is a big purple ball, that is the Holosseum. For anyone to be apprehended the cops or bounty hunters must first fight the enemy, (keep in mind that they are both vulnerable to attacks from any outside influence) and the winner of that battle determines the outcome of this encounter. So if the cop wins, the burglar is caught, and if the burglar wins he gets off. You will find this very weird in the beginning, and then you will soon get used to it.

This game is very simple in terms of structure in the story mode. Here is the general flow: the main character will wake up in the morning, either by a phone call or the landlady. Next you will go to a specific spot on the map. After that you will either find a criminal, or be entered into a tournament to find out who is the best Robo Commander around. After you solve your case/win the tournament for the day, you will go back home, the game will save, and a new day will start and you will go over this process again. While this does seem repetitive, and believe me it is, there is some charm about it because you know you will face new enemies in battle, and get new parts to upgrade your Robo.

The best thing about Custom Robo: Battle Revolution is the high level of customization. Before you go into any battle, you have the ability to change any of the parts on your Robot, from the body style, to the guns, legs, bombs, and other things. It is up to the players to find the best combination of all the available parts to create the robot that works best for your playing style. Each type of part that you can put on your robot has attributes, such as attack, defense, speed, and various other features, to create the perfect robot for you to command.

The graphics are very simplistic in nature. All of the characters, except for the main ones, look completely identical. It is funny because the game even pokes fun at itself. During one of the missions at the Lab, one of the technicians complains that they all look alike, because they are forced to wear the same lab coats and glasses. Most of the detail in the game was put into the Robots, but you can not even get a good glimpse of them while you are in battle, because the camera perches itself in a spot where you can get a good view of all of the action. The environments that you will fight in are varied, from different themes and obstacles, but they all have the same feel to them.

The music that you will hear in the game is very forgettable. The problem with this is that it can get very repetitive during the course of the game, because you will hear some of the same tracks over and over again. The sound effects used in the game are also just as forgetting and very generic sounding. One last note is that this game doesn’t support voiceovers for the text, and it is really disappointing, because it is something that has become very common in games of this nature nowadays.

Also before you enter battle, you will be able to look at the stats of any enemies that you will face. This will allow you to come up with the best weapons and even some strategy before you go into a battle. Once you defeat enemies you will receive some additional parts for your robot to use.

Custom Robo: Battle Revolution is rated T for Teen. It will take 15 blocks for game saves.

Review Scoring Details for Custom Robo

Gameplay: 7.5
The story mode is very simple, you go though the same routine everyday, yet the battles are really fun to play at. The battles are varied, along with the robots, but after a while, this game does get really repetitious.

Graphics: 7.5
Very simple-minded graphics, you will find nothing special here.

Sound: 6.9
This game could have benefited from voiceovers and better soundtrack!

Difficulty: Easy
This game is so easy it is not even funny. If you do lose a match, you can just go re-challenge the person without any sort of penalty.

Concept: 8.5
The concept for this game is really good. I mean customize your own robot and going into battle with it, who doesn’t like that? Plus the robots are completely customizable, which adds some replay value.

Multiplayer: 7.7
Playing against another human is a whole lot better than the AI in this game.

Overall: 7.5

Custom Robo: Battle Revolution will not give players a challenge as some other games of this nature might, but this is a perfect game for the younger gamers in the world. If you are a younger gamer, then you will really like this game, otherwise you might want to skip this one.
